Join us for our third Rest Stop of the EduRoadTrip as we hang out and chat about the scary and sweet of education. In this exciting EduRoadTrip adventure, we pause to think about the great things happening in our classrooms, and think deeply about issues we face in education.
Paul Solarz was our guest at the geographic center of the United States to discuss a student centered classroom. Paul is the author of Learn Like a Pirate and leads the #learnlap chat on Mondays at 8pm EST. He shares how he engages all students, and puts much of the responsibility on students while he guides their learning. We also hear about our Travel Agent, Laurie Baker Worthington, and discuss IFTTT in the What’s In Our Suitcase segment.
Our Travel Agent this week is Laurie Baker Worthington, a middle school math teacher in Chula Vista, California who was honored as a district Teacher of the Year in 2015.

Main Segment
In this episode of the EduRoadTrip, we discuss our podcasting process, starting from the initial planning process on Google Docs and Voxer, through our recording process on Google Hangouts on Air, and finally with our editing and uploading process via Blogger. We emphasize that this entire process is done with native equipment on our laptops, at no additional cost (aside from Justin’s editing software, which he purchased a few years ago), and is relatively easy for the moderately techy person to complete.
On this episode of the EduRoadTrip, we visit with Ben Brazeau at Gettysburg to chat about making history come alive. Not only is he a great teacher and Tech Integrator, he is the host of #sstlap. You will also hear about Julie Davis, our Travel Agent, and learn about Google Keep, which we pull out of our suitcase this week.
Ben Brazeau is a Tech Integrator in Green Bay Public Schools. After 15 teaching of teaching various levels of social studies, he made the the switch to being the Tech Integrator. In addition to this official responsibility, he is the leader of #sstlap Twitter chat, which meets Thursdays at 9 pm EST. We enjoyed meeting him at Gettysburg and talking about making history come alive.
This week we pulled Google Keep out of our suitcase. Google Keep is a clean and concise to-do list and note-making platform, where all lists are arranged as tiles, and are easy to interact with. Even better, to-do lists can be shared with multiple Google users, making managing group projects easy.
On this episode of EduRoadTrip, we are meeting with Jen Williams at the Library of Congress to discuss the love of reading and literacy. Jen shared about her work with Calliope Global, and her mission of sharing her love of reading with students and adults alike. We also feature Erin Southam as our Travel Agent, and pull Autocrat out of our suitcase.

What’s In Our Suitcase
This week we feature Autocrat, a Google Add-On for Sheets, which allows for a mail-merge function, including populating a Google Doc with answers to a Google Form or Sheet. Autocrat also allows for users to email completed mail merges to separate email addresses. EduRoadTrip has used Autocrat to create a Mad Libs of our show, where you can take part in the show! On this episode of EduRoadTrip, we marveled at the Golden Gate Bridge, and talked with Richard Hattal about bridging the gap between traditional and 21st century classrooms. We learned about the Literacy Design Collaborative, which provides students with interdisciplinary learning experiences and scaffolded writing. Additionally, we featured our Travel Agent, Allison Kerley, and found Plickers in our suitcase.
We interviewed Richard Hattal at the Golden Gate Bridge, and discussed bridging traditional with 21st century classrooms. He spent his career (22 years!) in the US Air Force, then went back to school to earn a teaching degree. Richard’s classroom is very connected with other classrooms, and allows students to chat with many professionals in a variety of fields. He talks about the Literacy Design Collaborative, which bridges all content areas to create engaging and real-life lessons that scaffold learning and support the writing process.
Allison Kerley is a 4th grade teacher in Atlanta, Georgia, and was recently awarded Teacher of the Year. She has great resources and ideas, and is innovating with flipping her classroom. Connect with her on Twitter: @TeachKerley

Plickers (paper clickers) is a great student response tool for classrooms that are not 1:1. Each student gets a Plickers card, and holds up the card to indicate A B C or D, and the teacher scans the room with a smartphone or tablet. www.plickers.com
